Railcraft Introduction

  1. First gather the materials. Clay can be found in Rivers or underwater. Mining a Clay Block gives 4 Clay Balls. Each Clay item can be smelted into a Brick. And you're going to need a lot of Nether Bricks for the Blast Furnace. 1 Netherrack can be smelted into 1 Nether Brick. Or just take some Nether Brick Blocks from the Nether Fortress.
  2. Follow the recipes on the Coke Oven page and use the Sand and Bricks to craft 26 Coke Oven Bricks. Build the Coke Oven Bricks in a 3x3x3 cube with the center hollowed out to assemble the full Coke Oven.
  3. The Coke Oven is used to produce Coal Coke and Creosote Oil. It will only accept Coal as input. The process is very slow, so, depending on your needs, you may want to build another Coke Oven. But we're also planning to automate this using Applied Energistics later on.
  4. Attach Fluid Pipes to the Coke Oven and route it to a Fluid Tank. For Galacticraft Fluid Pipes you'll have to use the Galacticraft Wrench to set the pipe closest to the Coke Oven to output mode. By doing this, any Creosote Oil produces by the Coke Oven will be transferred to a Fluid Tank. You can also place a Hopper below the Coke Oven to transfer Coal Coke into a chest.
  5. Now use the Nether Bricks, Soul Sand, and Magma Cream to craft 36 Blast Furnace Bricks. Assemble 34 Blast Furnace Bricks in a 3x4x3 structure with the center hollowed out to form the complete Blast Furnace. The Blast Furnace is used to turn Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots, and it also produces Blast Furnace Slag. The Blast Furnace will only accept Charcoal or Coal Coke as fuel. This also takes a very long time, but we're going to automate this later as well. Take care not to mine the Blast Furnace while it's working because it will actually have lava inside while it's working. Wait until the Blast Furnace is done to disassemble it.
  6. For any multi-block structure in Railcraft, you can craft the Magnifying Glass. This tool can tell you which blocks are missing in your multi-block structure.
